Oh, sweet mother ... so funny it hurts ... the trailer alone makes this the most quotable film in ages. Aint It Cool has an exclusive first look at Nacho Libre, and you simply must go there right now. For those unaware, this is Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess’ sophomore film starring Jack Black as a Mexican luchador. And, yes, it looks to absolutely live up to the possibilities of the concept ... oh my ...

They didn’t make fun of lucha libre, nice.

Wow...shows you different tastes. I didn’t even raise the corner of my mouth watching this.

You didn’t even laugh at the stretchy pants line, Richard? Man, that killed me ...

  4. Richard Brunton 02/04/2006 @ 10:52am

Nah. I thought that descended into complete stupidity for me. Still, different strokes and all that. I reckon it will do really well.

I’m happy it’s an original story and not following any trend of movies right now.

the trailer makes it looks kind of stupid but i imagine the movie is actually really funny.

    Film of the Year, eh?

  9. Jake Brahm 02/04/2006 @ 8:43pm

There aren’t enough comedy movies being made...so anything based on being funny is A OK in my book.

Eh… that trailer doesn’t exactly inspire me. Hopefully, underneath all the randomness and stupidity, there is a heart; it’s that one quality that makes me like Napoleon Dynamite as much as I do.

A bit of hyperbole there obviously, Mark, considering it’s only February and I’ll be seeing in the neighborhood of two hundred other films before the end of the year and who knows what will happen between now and then. But that said, I can’t remember the last time I was looking forward to a straight ahead comedy this much, particularly not a US one. I’ve been in love with the concept since I first heard of it and that trailer just hits all of the right notes. At the moment the only Hollywood films that I have a similar level of expectation for are Aronofsky’s The Fountain and Linklater’s A Scanner Darkly, and if I walk out of that theater without feeling like the film has landed an instant spot within my year end top five it will be an enormous disappointment.

Black, to me, is a simply enormous talent who has generally been under or mis-used through most of his career with only High Fidelity and School of Rock - which is just so much better than it has any right to be - coming to mind as films that really tap into his full potential. This looks to be another one, a film the gives some sort of outlet to his mania while also givinghim a really human heart. And yeah, Michael, I find him plenty sympathetic in that trailer, far more fully developed than Napoleon Dynamite.

I think Mike White is an excellent writer and a good foil to Hess, someone who writes much better characters and does a very good job of balancing character with comedy. Plus he obviously understands White’s charisma, proven with his work on School of Rock and, to a lesser degree, Orange County - another film that works much better than it should, though not reaching nearly as high as Rock.

And the trailer makes it look as though Hess has taken a big step forward since Dynamite, really refining the stuff that made him stand out there. American comedy is so incredibly dominated by cynicism, irony and pointless, mean spirited shock humor that I find someone like Hess - who I don’t think has a mean spirited bone in his body - making these well crafted and really just very goofy films incredibly appealing.

Obviously its early and I could be totally wrong, but what else do you see topping this in the Hollywood comedy factory? It sure as hell isn’t The Pink Panther ...

Hm… much like early materials / notices for NAPOLEON DYNAMITE, this didn’t do anything for me. I did, however, end up enjoying DYNAMITE a great deal. And I do love all things SANTO. As someone above pointed out, at least this is an original piece. I’ll give it a shot for that reason if nothing else.

“under or mis-used through most of his career with only High Fidelity and School of Rock”

Um, King Kong was an interesting (and very well done) use of Black’s talent.

what about ultraviolet? isn’t ultraviolet among your most anticipated movies this year? wink

    and silent hill?

I thought the Trailer was good, but not side-splitting. But the same is true for Napoleon Dynamite....it was a totally un-trailerable film. You have to just let the slow and silly surrealness of it just envelope you. It’s a lot like a Euro director I like, Aki Kaurasamaki (Drifting Clouds). His characters are slow burn quirky… like Wes Anderson. They’re not fast quirky like Will Ferrell.  You can’t just see 30 seconds and say, YEAH I get it (unless you’re Todd!). You have to see the whole film, and then you come out with a big fat grin on your face!

Bottom line: I think this film is going to be another cult gem!
