The Olympia Film Festival’s (WA state) event ‘All Freakin’ Night’ makes this event seem like a cheap imposter.. Can’t say anything else is really good about the fest, but AFN more than makes up for it.

I’ll be attending the Massacre this year (I couldn’t make it for the inaugural event) and, of course, my views on it will depend on everything from print quality to crowd behavior, but I’m not sure why jandrew thinks it akin to a “cheap impostor” of All Freakin’ Night. For one thing, 24-hour marathons and dusk-til-dawn drive-ins were held in various places long before either event. For another, the Massacre is showing 12 features, two 60-minute television films, and a short over 24 hours. All Freakin’ Night is showing 5 films over 10 hours—nothing to sneeze at, mind you, but if the Massacre is an impostor, it’s hardly a cheap one. Add Joe Dante and John Hancock to the schedule and you really have quite a line-up.
Moreover, the Massacre line-up is comprised more of classics and cult classics, while AFN’s line-up is more in the B-movie vein (though “Night of the Creeps” will show at both), making it more in line with the B-Fest held at Northwestern University every year.
I’m not trying to cut down AFN, as it sounds like a lot of fun. But though I have yet to experience the Massacre, overall it does seem to be a bigger and better (at least in terms of quality films) event. Of course, with one fest in Olympia, Washington and the other in Chicago, it will be the rare movie buff who gets to compare anything beyond the line-ups. As for me, though I know I won’t be enduring all 24 hours, I’m really looking forward to the great films and guests scheduled for the Music Box Massacre.
