SARS Wars
Ah, this makes Todd a happy boy. Muay Thai Chaiya is the 2007 martial arts drama from Thailand’s Five Star Productions, arguably the country’s best production house and home to the films of Wisit Sasanatieng and Pen-Ek Ratanaruang. Directed by Art of the Devil 2‘s Kongkiat Khomsiri - who also scripted Sasanatieng’s The Unseeable, a favor returned here with Sasanatieng providing art direction on Chaiya - the film holds its focus more on the dramatic elements while also working in some kick ass martial arts work with both elements building to a very satifying whole. It’s a film I enjoyed a lot on first viewing and which has continued to grow on me over time and one which is currently piling up Thai film awards - only recent gay themed drama Love of Siam from the director of 13 Beloved is faring better - while preparing to hit the international festival circuit. But if you don’t want to wait in hope of catching it on the big screen you don’t have to. The film has just received an English subtitled release in Singapore and comes highly recommended.
