Flame & Citron
While Japanese director Yoji Yamada only recently appeared on the radar of most western film goers thanks to the international success of his sterling Twilight Samurai, the man has been one of the busiest and most respected directors in his native Japan for decades. And among his most beloved creations is Tora-San, the long running series of films about a traveling salesman with no luck in love. Of the forty eight (!) entries in the series Yamada directed all but two while also writing the scripts for the entire series. The Tora-San films have never been easy to get in the west but they have been receiving an ongoing excavation and release on DVD in Hong Kong, where the individual films are also being bundled into box sets. The first set of eight films released back in 2006 while a second set - featuring the second eight in the series - just released earlier this week. And, yes, English subtitles are included, making this an excellent, low cost option for curious fans to check these out.
