There was a surprise 10-minute preview of ’Time Trumpet‘ on last night, 9:50pm on BBC 2. Iannucci did a voiceover for a whole series of clips and explained the ideas, whilst managing to not break out of the mood of the show itself. I wouldn’t say much more about the premise of the show, that we’re presented with faked clips of current celebrities from their future selves, except that the show has much more that what could seem a little basic - it’s a swipe at celebrity culture, politics, popular figures, TV, as well as the love of fame and the famous to the point where its clear they’ve nothing much to really offer : check out Tim Henman running a cafe called ’Tiger Timz‘, showing him as the ex-pro tennis star we had unreal expectations of, for example.

The kind of figures and shows featured in the ’Time Trumpet‘ will probably continue to make a good living out of it all, truth be told, but doesn’t stop it being a necessary point of discussion or something which shouldn’t be battled against. British public are far too prone to looking for illusions to live under, strangely aspirational lovers of fashion, consumer goods, pleasing others (with no real or substantial reason to) with things we’ve no need to feel pleased about appreciating, and we’re reliant on people with an eye like Iannucci to break many of the illusions for us - they’re so pervasive and dominant. Anyway, the shows clearly got depth and meaning, and looks to be one of the shows of the year. Very funny, dry stuff, and if you really do consider shows like ’Alan Partridge‘ any good, then Iannucci’s other work has no true reason to be ignored, I think.

Time TrumpetNew Clips at Official Site; probably not safe for work this time.
