Mamoru Oshii + Rinko Kikuchi = KIRU ~ KILL

Have you ever wished you could just skip to the end of an action film?  You know, ignore all that plot and story and character development stuff and just get to the big fight at the end?  Well, Ghost in the Shell director Mamoru Oshii obviously has.  He is supervising a four part, live action anthology film titled Kiru ~ Kill which asks four directors - and, yes, Oshii is one of them - to shoot a major action sequence as though it’s the end of some other, fictional film.  So it’s climax times four, with none of that pesky foreplay.

Oshii’s own segment is titled Assault Girl 2 and will star Babel and Brothers Bloom star Rinko Kikuchi and Yoko Fujita as a pair of women battling silently on an open field.  Kenta Fukasaku, with whom Oshii is also working on upcoming action feature Elle Is Burning, will also direct a segment.

    So I’m guessing (using my brilliant powers of deduction) that this will be a sequel of sorts to Oshii’s “Assault Girl” short from the “Shin Onna Tachiguishi Retsuden” omnibus. Which itself was pretty much an action climax without needless contextualization.

    Seems a safe bet ... I wish someone would collect Oshii’s different shorts.  He’s got a few out there that I’ve never been able to see ...

    It’s like a money shot compilation, except with even more adrenaline and someone might actually die before it’s over.

    Very, very interesting genre exercise. Making the conclusion the introduction and leaving the rest to imagination might prove a powerful narrative twist, done well.
    Maybe it’s a shame the emphasis is on action, though. Maybe.

    Oh, and Kikuchi Rinko with Oshii Mamoru? Holy shit.
    I think Oshii would only benefit from an actress so gifted at wordless expression.
