One of the pleasant surprises at last year’s Fantastic Fest, Sean Hogan’s Lie Still is “a quiet psychological horror think-piece” that is not without a couple of visceral “jump” moments. The film follows a new tenant (Stuart Laing) in a lonely apartment house who suffers harangues from an elderly neighbor and starts tuning in disquieting images on his tiny black and white television. It’s a very suggestive, distinctive picture.

And now it’s coming to Region 1 DVD, though you’ll have to look for it under its new title The Haunting of #24. It’s great that more people will be able to see the film, but it should be noted that Hogan had nothing to do either with the crappy new title or the horrid artwork, which obviously is meant to capitalize on the recent success of the recent Stephen King adaptation #1408. Hogan’s film was completed two years ago and has no connection with #1408—and the description as an “urban” ghost story is a bit misleading since the film is more rural in tone than urban.

I met Hogan briefly and he struck me as a very down-to-earth guy who’s busting his butt to try and realize his own cinematic visions. He mentioned in an e-mail that he’s working on a new project; we’ll post details as soon as they’re available. In the meantime, look for Lie Still (er, The Haunting of #24) on September 11.
