One thing that always saddens me is watching good films by quality directors just sort of ... vanish. There are always reasons for it, usually some sort of behind the scenes legal wrangling, but the reasons don’t make it go down any easier when you see something good just disappear into the vapor. It seems to have happened to Song Il-Gon’s The Magician(s), which came an went on a very limited basis on the festival circuit with nary a theatrical release of DVD in sight, and it also happened to Lee Sung-Gang’s supernatural psycho-sexual puzzler of a film Texture of Skin. Or, at least it seemed to have. After a good amount of build up thanks to the gorgeous stills and curiosity over the fact that a children’s animator - he directed My Beautiful Girl, Mari prior to this and Yobi The Fox afterwards - was making something so sexually charged for his live action debut, the film just sort of went ... poof. If it ever got a proper release in its native Korea, I’m not aware of it and that’s a crying shame. I caught the film when it screened at the Philadelphia Film Festival and it’s one dead solid piece of work. I’d given up hope of ever seeing it again until today I spotted a listing for a brand new, dirt cheap, English friendly and region free Hong Kong DVD issue of the film. It’s out there, people, and I recommend it rather strongly.

Thanks for the tip on this one. I’ve just placed it on order along with the R3 CJ7 DVD. I’ll let you know what I think of it.
