Fear X
Hmm. I’m feeling kind of mixed on this. I have been quite outspoken about my admiration for Baltasar Kormakur’s excellent Icelandic crime thriller Jar City and was pleased when I heard that IFC had picked it up for North American distribution. Sure, they’re small but they treat their stuff well and they seemed a good fit. But then Twitch reader Mary sent along news today that IFC have opted not to release the film theatrically, instead making it one of five titles designated to launch their new purely VOD imprint Festival Direct. Along with titles by Ken Loach, Nicholas Roeg and James Franco the film will be made available by video on demand before - I presume, though the article makes no mention of it - an eventual DVD release. IFC are positioning the new label as a middle ground between straight to video and full theatrical releases and while I see their point and acknowledge that these alternative distribution methods are increasingly the wave of the future - particularly for niche titles like this one - it just seems a shame that nobody on this continent is going to have the opportunity to see the starkly beautiful picture on the big screen where the cinematography can be appreciated fully.
