Khai’s Back: Teaser Trailer For LONDON CALLING

Well, he didn’t really go away, but the guy who famously made a Malaysian indie film called Ciplak for under $2,600, got his film a major release in cinemas, then went on to win the Anugerah Skrin award for Best Alternative Film, has been a busy bee. Not only was he doing some work in TV, he’s sneakily gone and made another film.

Khairil Bahar calls it “my lil’ indie movie,” but London Calling seems a bit more ambitious, being set in London (and Malaysia perhaps?) and having some well-known faces starring in it (Charmaine Poo, Justin Chan, Melissa Maureen). He doesn’t reveal much at this point in time, but from the trailer, London Calling seems like a much quieter film than the frantically paced Ciplak. Khai first experimented with dual locations in Ciplak, getting footage shot in London without him ever stepping off homeground, via the Internet and snail mail. It’s kind of like the stuff of legend now, as is the fact that he shot the entire film for less than $2,600.

Oh, did I mention that already?

Watch the trailer embedded at his blog. There are some stills there as well.

apparently there’s no Anugerah Skrin award for Best Alternative Film to be given out this year due to shortage of entries - which was almost the same case last year. too bad.

hi Mitch. if you read the previous article on Twitch, it’s mentioned there that he bought a Canon camera and got all his friends to help out. a short film, say 20mins, made independently, can easily cost up to RM5,000, even with a borrowed camera. so it’s still pretty nifty that he managed to make a whole feature for under RM10,000.

oh yeah? apparently “The Big Durian” only cost RM5K. how bout that? was the film “legendary” because of its budget? like I said, we don’t need another Meor Shariman. thanks.

yeah, that whole “alternative film” category is a bit weird. what does “alternative film” really mean?

Mitch, put Big Durian right next to Ciplak. were any of BD’s scenes shot overseas? what is the difference between the number of shots in BD and Ciplak? in terms of technique, which film requires more? you cannot put an apple and an orange together (or in this case a durian!) and say they are the same in every way just becos they’re both fruits.

    btw, who’s this Meor Shariman?

I’d ask what a Durian is but unfortunately I know… confused
