A rainy night, still in that sweet limbo between Spring and Summer. A young woman walks on the side of the street, when something—something we don’t see—catches her attention. All we’re able to see before hearing her scream is a hand grabbing her shoulders, and the desperate look on her face before becoming just one of the many victims of a serial killer who’s been stealing sleep from the investigators on the case, but most importantly all those young victims and their families. Am I talking about Bong Joon-Ho’s 2003 masterpiece 살인의 추억 (Memories of Murder)? Not really, although you’ll soon discover how much the film starring Song Kang-Ho and Kim Sang-Kyung owes to what started the ‘genre’ on Korean TV. No, the scene is from 서울은 비 (Rain in Seoul), the last of over 800 episodes of one of the most influential, respected and just plain entertaining Korean TV Dramas of all time, none other than the classic 수사반장 (The Chief).

I’d buy it ages ago if only there were English subs! Let’s hope in a re-edition… I was also wondering why they were only 10 episodes… Now I know. Thanks X, as usual… ^_^
