Johnnie To’s Election topped the Hong Kong box office this past weekend and word is that he’s also wrapped filming on the sequel, which again stars Louis Koo and Simon Yam. According to ScreenDaily the second film will involve the interactions between the Wo-Shing Society (i.e. the triad group) and the Chinese government which I’m sure will please the Chinese censors and ratings boards to no end. The photo to the left is an unfortunately blurry shot of the Election 2 poster frm the Ming Pao Weekly website ...

There’s already a Chinese DVD of Election available at Sensasian, distributor listed as “Liao Ning Wen Hua”.
Is this the cut, re-edited Chinese version of Election...? A bootleg...?
Seems too good to be true at $5.99

I just watched the senasian dvd of Election and was in awe of how bad the film was. I’m praying that this is the “re-edited” version emposed by the Chinese government and that it differs from the Hong Kong version. To’s a brilliant director and I’m sure would not let such junk tarnish his amazing body of work. The rumor around is that the violence in the original version that he submitted was so over the top that the chinese government felt compelled to force a cleaner version of the film.
