Hmm, a change of plans for Johnnie To?  Back in November The Visitor reported on a planned upcoming adaptation of The Water Margin, a famous Chinese epic, in the works with Infernal Affairs director Andrew Lau pushing the whole thing along.  At the time, it was announced that Lau would direct the first film of the trilogy with Johnnie To directing the second and an as-yet unnamed director handling the third.  Sounded like a pretty exciting project at the time but apparently the excitement has waned for To ...

In a recent Chinese language interview - summarized nicely by Grady Hendrix over at Kaiju Shakedown, where you’ll also fin a new still from To’s Sparrow and a behind the scenes shot from PTU 2 - To states that “he would never direct a period martial arts movie unless it was really, really, really special” and that he is “completely uninterested in THE WATER MARGINS as a film project”, his only interest in the story being Gao Qiu, one of the characters in the epic.

You can read this statement two ways, one being that he has no interest in being involved in the project at all any more, the other being that if he is involved we can expect his entry in the trilogy to be radically altered from the source material and focus purely on Gao Qiu.
