There Will Be Blood There Will Be Blood

John Woo Produced APPLESEED: EX MACHINA Getting The Deluxe DVD Treatment!

Yes, it’s one of the more anticipated titles around here, the CG-animated sequel to the revivial of Ghost in the Shell scribe Shirow Masamune’s Appleseed franchise.  The first film pioneered a new form of CG animation built around motion capture technology that gave the characters unnervingly accurate movements and made for - in my book - just sumptuous eye candy with a more than servicable story.  That animation style has since been further refined in Vexille and refined even more for this project.

Anticipation for this one is running high enough that Appleseed: Ex Machina is receiving a virtual day and date DVD release around the globe - good news for fans.  What’s even better news for fans?  The Japanese releases - which hit just three days after the US releases - are English subtitled.  The standard edition is currently selling for just nine dollars more INCLUDING shipping than Amazon is listing the US version for WITHOUT shipping so the difference is just a few bucks.  The show stopper, however, is the inevitable, limited edition Japanese release.  Oh yeah ... much more expensive but it includes three bonus DVDs, including the full US dub of the film, an HD-DVD disc of the Japanese film and what they’re listing as two “collectible booklets”.  Let me tell you ... I’ve got the Limited Edition version of the first Appleseed film and those booklets are full on tomes - a coffee table book of film art plus the complete story boards - and considering the weight of this is listed at an even kilogram I expect the same here.  I know which one I’m ordering.

This is the first I’ve heard about a shorter US version of APPLESEED: EX MACHINA - what is your source for this info?

From the listing of the Limited Edition box.  It says specifically you get the Japanese cut on the first disc and the 105 minute American cut on one of the bonus discs.  It doesn’t list the run time of the Japanese cut, though, and I’ve not been able to find that anywhere.

OK, thanks for the clarification. According to a poster over on the Anime On DVD HD forum, the Japanese site for EX MACHINA lists the same running time for both the US and Japanese versions of the film. Hopefully this is correct. I was going to pre-order the US Blu-ray edition, but I guess I will wait until uncut status is confirmed.

Can anyone confirm if the limited edition Japanese Version found here has English subtitles?

droogdim:  that set you’ve linked to is the special edition of the first film.  I’ve got it and it’s GORGEOUS but does not include any English features at all.

AHTB, thanks for that link ... clarifies some things ...

Sorry, I was going to ask if there are any special English friendly editions, but I already noticed that Amazon carries the Steelbook double disc with and without action figure.

In case anyone cares, there’s also a Steelbook DVD of Appleseed:  Ex Machina available for pre-order on Amazon.
