Yes, kids, John Woo is back.  And in a big way.  Remember when word was first breaking about Windtalkers and how everybody got all excited about the action film legend taking a crack at a big budget war picture?  Remember how bad it hurt when the film actually came out and was just really, really bad?  Well, turns out he was just making the wrong war film.  A massive production that was hit with some major casting snags in the form of Chow Yun Fat’s flip flopping on whether he’d star in the picture at all - he’s out - Battle of Red Cliff is the biggest Chinese film ever and it’s fair to say that Woo’s career very likely rests on its success.  And I think he’s safe.

A very low grade Chinese trailer released a little while back and while it was grainy as all hell it still managed to impress.  Well, the Japanese have just released their own teaser for the film and it is in much higher resolution and features a healthy amount of fresh footage.  Yes, kids, this thing is absolutely gorgeous and looks to be rather bloody to boot.  Watch for the tip of the cap to Hard Boiled at the end.  You’ll find both trailers embedded in the Twitch Player below the break.

Now I’m getting excited for this! That original teaser off of Sina (I think) just looked so so, and it didn’t quite do it for me like a John Woo film should. This teaser, although short, got me far more excited. the back to back shots of Takeshi Kaneshiro and Tony Leung Chiu-Wai in the middle of the teaser are the highlight, and it’s also great to see that reference to Hard Boiled what with the baby at the end. So, is it officially being split into two parts for it’s release in Asia, one in July and one at the end of the year?

looks absolutely delicious. I honestly think teasers tend to make me want to see a movie more than trailers… trailers just usually show too much. That shot with Takeshi with his back to the camera (I think that’s him?) looked awesome

yeah, I agree. yeah, that’s the shot of Takeshi which I was talking about, looks awesome indeed, and a few seconds later the shot of Tony w/ the bow & arrow. I read somewhere today that it’s going to premiere at Cannes, albeit in a shortened international version. I’m not sure if this is true, but if it is, I think they should show the full 4 hour cut at Cannes instead of a version that cuts out 1 1/2 hours or so of footage. they might cut out those two great shots if they screw around with it. I hate it when people think films need to have a shorter cut for the international audience, I just wish that the same version could be shown worldwide at the same time.

well, its a cultural thing. Its not shortened in Asia because audiences in Korean , Japan, Taiwan, etc.. know the story and stuff. They dont know the background of it in the West
