Goody. It is time once again for copious amounts of blood to rain down from the sky above. Here we have the trailer for Tak Sakaguchi’s Samurai Zombie, his second foray into film direction. It is of no concern to us that it is obviously a low budgeted affair it certainly does make up for it with dismemberment and blood letting.

This Japanese low-budget action drama follows a family on a trip that encounters a man threatening them with a gun on a desolate mountain trail. At a moment of maximum tension, a couple shows up out of nowhere, kills the man and disappears again, and shortly after a lunatic old lady comes and warns them of death. The frightened family is headed for a showdown for no reason with samurai zombies resurrected from their graves.

Samurai Zombie is a so-called fusion-style film that has established itself as a trend. What starts out as an action movie turns into a gory horror film and then goes back to action all over again. Each genre is decorated with utter tackiness. Zombies resort to traditional action using swords and bows rather than biting off the alive and actors demonstrate what overacting really is as they take comic motions at the most serious moments. Attraction of this film brimming with exaggeration throughout should be found in its freewheeling style. The unexpected, hidden drama is quite interesting as well.

It stars comedian Yakkun Sakurazuka, Nana Natsume [Sasori], Keiko Oginome, Issei Ishida, Mitsuru Fukikoshi [Samurai Fiction, Stereo Future and The Twilight Samurai], and Kyôsuke Yabe [Crows Zero and Crows Zero II].

Versus had some moments, but it bored the hell out of me with all those long a pointless takes of the characters looking at each other and trying to pull some “cool” poses and what not. The whole premise was far more interesting than the overall execution.

I can see where there are similarities between Samurai Zombie and Versus, but I’m thinking that this will be better in general. Versus was the first real film directed by Kitamura, and was Tak’s first acting gig. Tak has gotten a lot of decent films under his belt since then, and judging from Be A Man! Samurai School, he’s developed a decent eye for directing, especially when it comes to action. I think as long as this film doesn’t try to take itself too seriously, it will be a blast to watch.
