... Guillermo Del Toro is directing The Hobbit.  At a recent screening of The Orphanage Del Toro appeared on stage with director J.A. Bayona and simply stood and smiled as Bayona informed the crowd that the deal was done and Del Toro would be directing the film versions of The Hobbit.  Times being what they are, video of the announcement is already up on YouTube.  Here’s the direct translation of Bayona’s comment, thanks to Aaron Soto:  “Today is a great day, because finally what we all wanted has been announced, Guillermo Del Toro will direct The Hobbit!”

    Wow.

Chalk me up as one of those folks who would rather see Del Toro doing original stuff, rather than shit like this.

But, good for him, he’s gonna make scads of money.  And who knows, maybe this is one of those “I’ll make this for you if you finance my obscure movie idea” deals.

Garth. - Ditto on your sentiments .  I love the big red-headed man, but now he’s likely committed for 2+ years to do two films I have little interest in seeing.  Eeeeech.  More spanish-language work along the lines of Cronos/Backbone/Labyrinth please.  I hope this gets your Lovecraft projects funded, if you have to make Hobbit movies.

Yeah, exactly.  If the Lovecraft movie or one of the other passion projects he has talked about gets off the ground because of this, awesome, but I have very little interest in The Hobbit… I would love for his At the Mountains of Madness to be a dispropotionately huge hit because lots of people might see it based on “From the director of The Hobbit”.  That could be cool.
