Take this one with a grain of salt, the original source being somewhat unreliable - Chinese media often being more than willing to promote rumors as fact - but Chinese website Sina has reported that with his exhaustive Battle of Red Cliff now in the can director John Woo is looking ahead to his next project.  Word is that project will be 1949, a historical drama about the Chinese Civil War in which Mao Tze Tung rose to power while Chiang Kai-shek and the previous mainland government moved wholesale to create Taiwan.

This is certainly fertile ground for Woo to till but given the ongoing political tensions between the Chinese mainland government and Taiwan - tension that routinely involves Communist China massing troops within striking range of the border and threatening forcible invasion - I have to assume this would be virtually impossible to fund and make in China without an EXTREME amount of pressure and control insisted upon by both the mainland and Taiwanese governments.  Apparently Woo is in discussions with screen writer Wang Hui-Ling - a regular collaborator with Ang Lee - to work on the script.

I hope this film won`t be made. He should contiue making Chinese gunplay films. I wouldn`t mind seeing one with Jet Li.
