Is Olivier Marchal The French Michael Mann?

My thanks to regular reader Mary for pointing out a fresh gallery of stills from Olivier Marchal’s French crime thriller MR 73 on the website of production house Gaumont. While there’s no trailer available online for the film yet I did manage to catch a promo reel at the American Film Market and was very impressed by Marchal’s ability to balance out gloss with grit, a gift you only really see on these shores in the films of Michael Mann. Marchal’s previous film - 36 Quai des Orfèvres - was very well received and all signs are that this one will be just as good.

While I’ll happily watch Marchal’s films and acknowledge that he brings insider knowledge to the crime and cop stories he films, I don’t think for a moment he’s the French Michael Mann or any type of Michael Mann.
As a director, he is not as adept technically or as precise, and still resorts to cliched use of slow motion and some clumsy editing. He also does not control the framing or the compositions anywhere as intensely as Mann does.
