Since Dreamworks never got it together enough to, a) put decent english subtitles on the USA disc, b) make them a reasonable size (i.e not HUGE), or c) correctly and effectively manage the replacement program. So, Japan is getting it together on their behalf - and issuing a disc for 3,200 yen (roughly £15 / $30 at amazon.co.jp - 3,990 yen recommended retail price) that has Japanese, English, Taiwanese, Korean and French subtitles on it.
Expect a decent job on this, as Japan isn’t in the habit of cocking things up and doing them again. It seems quite happy to provide the alternative choice it’s able to when another country does though. Theres a 25,000 yen limited edition (1000 copies) available too, with a model of some kind. Here is the WatchImpress page that was amongst the information posted at the DVDTalk.com forum, the first mention of this I have seen.

I’ve been holding off on buying the Dreamworks release for any number of reasons - mainly because I can never seem to find the one with the right subtitles. However, I think I’ll just pick this one up instead. I can wait a few more months.

Yes, excellent! I was just wondering what version to pick up as I need to get some reference shots from the movie and this looks like the perfect one.

I was also holding off for the same reasons, opus. This is slightly related, but does anyone know much about the supposed R1 release of the Innocence “music video” DVD? This is what I’m curious about.

I had the Korean edition of that and it’s not actually that hot.

Gabriel, it’s just part of the Innocence score set to various environments from the film. It’s not particually interesting but is quite nice as a demo disc, even better with the R1’s DTS one would hope.

I agree - the Dreamworks edition was not too good. Also, the subtitles included the ‘hearing impared’ stuff like ‘(dogs barking)’ and ‘(shuffling sounds)’. Unless I had the wrong setting. A proper release will be great!

My copy of this just arrived ... gave it a quick spin and it’s gorgeous ... packaging is just beautiful. Some type of hard metallic case that I’ve never seen before but I hope I see them more often. It’s a two disc set, the subbed version appears on disc two ... haven’t check run times to see if the two discs feature different cuts or what the general point of the two discs is yet ...

does it look anything like the ‘appleseed’ R1 or similar : kind of molded metal around a plastic inner… ?

Would love to hear more details when you have them Todd. Also how the font and translation of the subtitles are done, since the ugly and simplified subtitles on the region 1 were the reason I didn’t get that release.

I haven’t seen the fancy Appleseed R1, I’ve just got the single disc in the regular snap case ... I’ll try and remeber to post a pic or two of this one ... it’s nice.
I did give the subs a quick spin and they’re pretty much perfect ... well sized and placed, exactly how you want ‘em.
