Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, I proudly present to you one of the official Best Things Ever:  outer space Nazis.

We have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of some footage from upcoming Finnish sci-fi comedy Iron Sky from the day we first caught wind of it seemingly ages ago.  We’ve hosted the very first concept art from the film, had a few chats with the director and production team and just generally been sold on the concept from the word go.  And here it is:  in 1945, realizing that the war was taking a turn for the worst, the Nazis sent a collection of their best and brightest to establish a secret base on the moon where they would nurse themselves back to strength and develop their powerful military technology until the were ready to return.  That day will arrive in 2018.

After months of work and fine tuning to get everything just right the teaser arrived on YouTube yesterday, which seems a shameful way to treat something as visually impressive as this.  Apparently the director agrees as he’s just passed us a MUCH higher quality version of that same promo spot to load in to the Twitch Player.  And, hot damn, the wait has been worth every second.  This thing is spectacular, from the detailed CG work, to the spectacular production design, to that weirdly mournful title song - one that wouldn’t be out of place in a Bond film.  Everything about this thing is absolutely perfect.  You’ll find the teaser in the Twitch Player below the break.

Wow, that looks really cool. I would’ve gone in a different direction with the music though, didn’t quite fit in with the visual style for me.

I watched it twice yesterday (immediately after it was released publicly) and now again. The Energia crew have put up a very, very impressive demonstration, I must admit. They’ve got the technology, budget and time on their hands and I’m sure what they’ll come up with is going to be groundbreaking, probably not only in Finnish scale, but worldwide too. I think the music fit well with the visuals, personally.

I guess it should be mentioned that none of this teaser is going to be in the final film, I think. Also, the site is well worth taking a look.

God damn I hope this happens. That shot of the saucers approaching the moon was truly awe inspiring.
Why do I get such a boner over nazi pulp?

This looks amazing. The scene with the nazi saluting on the moon was gold.

Totally rad. Why didn’t I come up with this idea? Nazi moon base = gold. But yeah, the music is a terrible, terrible fit. Makes me nervous about the direction this could ultimately go in. It’s a cool song and an easy mistake to make. Cool images, cool song, let’s throw them together… But it’s just not cohesive. I realize the lyrics are fitting, but that’ makes it even lamer. Oddly enough, this is something I’ve noticed in a lot of contemporary finnish films lately. Shitloads of talent, really slick films with terrific production values made on smaller budgets, that often happen to have really odd music cues, awkward scene transitions, and really horrid pacing. But then again, I’ve only seen 7 or so Finnish films this past year.

It’s got potential though, I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for this one in the coming months.

Although..... I think I’m still far more pysched about “Worst Case Scenario.”

Great! Now, the question is, will it stand that quality inside the comedy? And actually the teaser is great, but it doesn’t look like comedy (except last secs, of course)… So I’m a bit confused what will it be like… Nevertheless, I’m intrigued…

The only thing I need now is a release date and I’m there!
