I don’t know how many regularly follow what I write on British Comedy. Perhaps because, for the most part, I don’t write about that stuff because I have either seen it and it has been years since then, or because it’s dominated by my other interests, people aren’t entirely convinced by it all. Anyway, there’s a rich vein of entertainment there that’s mostly going missing, doesn’t get coverage on websites that follow DVD releases, so I sound like the lone madman trying to draw attention to something. Jumping up an down, waving my arms, screaming. That said, I watch more comedy, always have, than anything else - by a long long way - but I just don’t need to buy it on DVD to see it, but I also don’t want others to miss out.

Here’s a key part of the jigsaw then, from the last 20 years (more recent than that though!) of British Comedy. Steve Coogan, who we’ve openly said we rate more highly than the very large majority, if not everyone else, of British Talent working in that field. Crap later film appearances aside, this is the genius of the bunch, the funny, clever, intelligent, satyrical, insightful one - the leader of the pack, literally. So much reaction to this show hidden away online, dating back to the initial U.K TV appearance of the show and the R2 UK DVDs, but you’ll rarely have anywhere pointing these kinds of shows out, which is a travesty for the R1 USA DVDs.

Now, lots of shows seem to be coming to R1 USA DVD and I’m not able to keep my eye on that for everyone, so it’s worth looking over my recommendations as they come along and looking for R1’s yourself I suppose… some come along a lot later than expected, and if you’re (hopefully) Region Free (there’s no other way to be) then ’I’m Alan Partridge‘ is an absolute corker of a series. For everyone that like their stuff to get them completely obsessed, engrossed, charged with excitement, it’s simply one of the great series that’s been around. Stunner.

The British Comedy reports are the reason why I read Twitch. (Sorry, I wouldn’t know a HK film if it landed on my head.) I also keep an eye out at DVD news sites. Here’s a list of Britcoms arriving on R1 DVD soon:

Oct. 24: Jonathan Creek series 1, Creature Comforts series 2 & Christmas special

Nov. 7: Men Behaving Badly series 5-6; Doctor Who: The Hand of Fear and The Mark of the Rani

Nov. 14: Little Britain series 3

    Jan. 9: MI-5 (Spooks) series 4

Jan. 16: My Hero series 1

glad you like them then manda.

i dont tend to report on the day-to-day happenings, the best site for that is chortle.co.uk, as theres very little and i would simply be repeating what was said there - so, following the standard with how we generate content here at twitch, i go for the personal interest angle, so its new shows on TV and new shows on DVD and it’s from a recommendation perspective i mention those - most of which will be in the DVD release calendar, the key ones, the best ones, the majors, all get individual posts and are around the easier-to-follow R2 UK DVDs (also tend to be earlier) and then i am selecting those i would recommend as blind-buys, things to look into and so on…

glad you spoke up too, cos most people keep quiet and dont put in their thoughts so i never quite know where i stand with the value of what i personally contribute. thats always helpful to update on. oh, and as for british crime shows like ‘spooks’ i often think of writing about those too, but once you start to explain such things they often sound strangely similar but theyre not at the subtle levels - ‘wire in the blood’ is worth a look, as is the new incarnation of ‘rebus’, and ‘’silent witness’ is easy to watch also - i see them as they appear on TV you see, so often theyre passing by as a natural daily part of my life that doesnt require me to follow them because my DVD purchases are a different field. ‘jonathan creek’, particularly the early shows, are absolutely superb, well worth a purchase, and dont forget the upcoming R2 UK box of todd and my favourite ‘hamish macbeth’ too.

Anyone looking forward to this should also try to catch the series “Knowing Me, Knowing You” which is already available on R1 DVD. It’s a good introduction to the Partridge character and makes the latter show more enjoyable.

My biggest question is: When is SPACED season 1 and 2 coming out on R1?

    “ERRRRRRRRR THESE ARE SEX PEOPLE”

    Alan Partridge, pure genius.

The dvd of the ‘Armando Iannucci Shows’ has just come out on R2 for anyone that’s interested, he was a co-writer on Alan Partridge, The Day today, to name just a few

Finally, Alan Partridge is starting to get the recognition that us Brits have known about since The Day Today—a great series. Apart from 24 Hour Party People, Coogan’s best stuff.

Also try and catch another early character—Paul Calf.Details here: http://www.coogans-run.co.uk/paulcalf/

BTW, Twitch is excellent—check it every day.

    Cheers,

    Johnny C.
