Stray Cat Rock: Delinquent Girl Boss
Get ready to add another name to the list of prominent Asian art film directors to try their hand at making a kung fu film. Ang Lee has done it. Chen Kaige has done it. Zhang Yimou has done it three times. And now Hou Hsiao-Hsien has announced that he will reunite with his Three Times star Shu Qi for an as-yet untitled kung fu project. No time period, no budget, no details of any sort announced yet, really, other than the fact that the script is in development and they aim to have it ready for 2008.

Hm. Hm.
The period episode of “Three Times” wasn’t exactly everyone’s favorite in that movie. That doesn’t necessarily mean he’s not good at it though, but wuxia seems a bit too “flashy” a genre for the style we know him for. So I’m extremely interested to see how this turns out, and hope he knocks it out of the park!
And good news that Shu Qi will be directed again by someone who isn’t afraid to make her act (instead of just using her as scenery).

A kungfu flick from Hou ? Amazing.

Interesting… I hope he brings his slow, contemplative style to the genre, and dials back on the flashy spectacle that seems to be genre’s trademark nowadays.

I would just like to second the “mmmm Shu Qi.”

i’m sensing it might not be as straightforward a kung fu movie like ang lee and zhang yimou did. i think he will incorporate the fighting scenes as just another elemebt of the film and not build the film around them. close to what wong kar wai did in ashes of time. anyway… looking forward to it.
i third the “mmmm Shu Qi.”

yeah i have a feeling it’ll be more similar to ashes of time than any other kungfu film. as a big fan of hou hsiao-hsien, i am really interested in how this turns out.
fourth the “mmmm shu qi.” she has sort of become the face of hou’s more recent works.

he won’t need a fight choreographer. he will probably have people fighting behind a wall.

Scenery remark notwithstanding, I fifth “mmmm Shu Qi.”

oh and i would just like to add that the 2nd segment in ‘three times’ was my favorite of the three. visually it of course reminded me of hou’s excellent ‘flowers of shanghai’, but what i really found interesting was the absence of the characters voices. a really gutsy move that worked out well i thought. then there was the constant piano score which was very pretty… i’m still trying to find a recording of that score, anyone know if it has been released on cd?
