Okay first- Saw truly ruled for those of us who don’t mind a little- OKAY A LOT- of kitsch with our killings. As I am forever mentioning you either get the concept or you don’t. Fans of horror films are subjected to so much bad cinema in search of the gems that when we run across a director who understands the pain of all that unintentional laughter we hold on to him like grim death. Saw away baby! Avenge those wasted hours!!! For those looking for a more in depth review of Saw go here. But those of you who already know a goofy thing when you see it read on.

SAW THE UNCUT EDITION
Lions Gate Home Entertainment

Okay I know does anybody really need another version of Saw. I can’t even verify that this “cut” is substantially different than the first one. But when I opened my envelope from Lion’s gate and SAW this packaging I was taken with a silly giggle and a smile on my face that didn’t go away til days end. Normally I hate those cheapie clear hard plastic DVD shells. You know the kind I’m talking about. The easily cracked kind they use for public domain movies that sell In the back of the Best Buy DVD section for super cheap.

Well what to my wondering eyes should appear but an uncracked case with a nice cardboard protective backer held in easily removable position by a series of rubber cement dabs. And the front of the case? A severed hand and the same lettering but with a clear squishy bloodpack over the top so that everytime you grab the disc the blood, and a rotating saw blade, gushes slowly around. It’s enough to make a man take up some new hobbies.

When I caught this movie on the big screen the audience was clearly expecting something along the lines of Seven. By the time Cary Elwes was shrieking and sawing away everyone had slowly but surely gotten the joke. It was great monsterific fun albeit virtually brainless. I felt like I’d stumbled into my own childhood backyard

There are also a lot of new special features. I won’t say your old disc is obsolete without a chance at thorough a b comparison but the quality here can’t be denied. This newly remastered alternate cut of Saw includes 2 feature length audio commentaries, the director’s original short film, on set preview of Saw 2 (don’t get your hopes up- you know what these things are like), behind the scenes featurette, an episode of Full Disclosure Report on the real Jigsaw investigation and other assorted ephemera.

The real reason to purchase this is the packaging but the I can’t imagine any DVD extra that would be better.
