Martyrs
This one is for the Toronto locals. Its a good time to be in Toronto for Guy Maddin fans. First there is the (tenuously) related Louis Negin one man show The Glass Eye, now Mr. Maddin is bringing his love/hate(and love-to-hate and hate-to-love)-letter docufantasia of his hometown, My Winnipeg, back to Toronto for a show featuring himself doing the live narration (the second time for this after the films premiere at last years Toronto International Film Festival). The screening is presented by The Images Festival and The Royal (608 College Street) with tickets priced at $20 in advance/$25 at the door (probably best to buy in advance) or $40 for ‘VIP treatment’, including reserved seating and My Winnipeg gift bag.

...and here he swore he’d never narrate it live again! How wonderful that he’s changed his mind. If I were in Toronto, I’d go back for this jackflash. I saw him narrate it live last year and then watched the film version at this year’s SFIFF51 and can vouch that Maddin likes to work a crowd and does so consummately. Live, the film is much much funnier.
I’m actually sitting down with Maddin for a conversation on Joan Crawford in the next couple of weeks.
