Another one of those shows from the recent past that I caught as it went out, still trying to get my head around why it stands out so much now in comparison to how it appeared to be taken when it was broadcast - the online fanbase is pretty big, the desire to get to see it again is great, and the general mood is ‘can’t wait for the DVD...!’. Memory fails me a bit, but I remember the huge (well, bigger than normal) build up - the advertising billboards in the cities, the regular TV adverts - and then it seemed to get buried late at night (later than comedy is generally broadcast which made it a show you needed to seek), and I wonder if it wasn’t shown twice in one week (each episode repeated for some reason?) and the broadcast day shifted around a little too.
Anyway, my impression was of a show that was great fun to watch, nothing else on at that time of night of that style, even though it was unusually long in it’s episode lengths too (an hour instead of the usual 30 minutes). All the performers either had a good pedigree or were reasonably well known if you had a sharp eye for small bit-parts in previous productions : the right balance or familiar and unsual faces. The show itself has a great style that’s pretty individual, the strange mix of childish behaviour from adults, slapstick, social situations, professional difficulties and so on - anyway watch the clips and you will see. As a reminder for those that caught it when it was on, or as a more visual tempter for those who wonder why Todd is chomping at the bit for the late appearance of the series on R2 UK DVD, I discovered a couple of lengthy online clips put together by fans… Series 2 begins broadcast here in the UK during March 2006.
