Here’s something that started popping up all over the place yesterday and came as a bit of a surprise to me ... Dino Di Laurentis has apparently told the Italian press that not only is there a fourth Hannibal Lecter film in the works but that Gong Li has been cast for the film. Between this, 2046 and Memoirs of a Geisha that means Li should be making a pretty strong impression on North American audiences over the next year ...
The new film is a prequel revolving around Hannibal’s early years and is titled The Lecter Variation. Word is that Anthony Hopkins may have a cameo or narration role but they are currently at work casting the character at various ages.

Wasn’t Macaulay Culkin going to play a young Hannibal Lecter?
Anyway, I kind of get the feeling that some Asian stars feel really honored when they are asked to play in a Hollywood movie. So they end up in, for example, yet another shitty Hannibal Lecter sequel. Too bad because I’d rather see actors like this keep making good movies in Asia.

Ditto Geert Jan.
Rare (recently, anyway) is the example of an actor or dirctor coming over from their native film industry to make better films in hollywood than they were doing at home.

I think the issue of having another “shitty” sequel is a bit off. I mean, in the end, you can’t please everyone.
For me, I just want to wait for this next installment. How good or bad a movie is depends on the perception of each individual that watches it. There are as many truths as there are many people.
Anyways, let’s just wait and see.
