Gong Li and Chow Yun-Fat Cast in New Zhang Yimou Film

It took 11 years, but they’re finally back: Director Zhang Yimou and Gong Li will work together again, for the first time since 1995’s 摇啊摇, 摇到外婆桥 (Shanghai Triad). Gong has been cast along Chow Yun-Fat in Zhang’s new film 满城尽带黄金甲 (Wearing Golden Armor Across The City), which is adapted from 雷雨 (Thunderstorm), a 1934 4-act play by Cao Yu, one of the most important Chinese playwrights of the 20th Century, often regarded as the ‘Shakespeare of China’. 

Gong and Zhang worked together on the 1995 film and several others, including 人生 (To Live), 秋菊打官司 (The Story of Qiu Ju), 大紅燈籠高高掛 (Raise The Red Lantern), 菊豆 (Ju Dou), and 紅高梁 (Red Sorghum). The two even had a widely reported relationship, which ended in the mid 90s.

The film, which will start shooting this February according to Qing Dao Daily, will be much bigger in scale than Zhang’s 英雄 (Hero), with battle scenes involving over 20,000 extras, against ‘Hero’s 12,000. ‘Wearing Golden Armour Across The City’ will release in Chinese theaters at the end of the year.

    Great news to hear about a new film with Gong Li and director Zhang Yimou. I think Gong Li is one of the most talented and beautiful actress in whole Asia. I already have high expectations on this one.

    Beautiful yes.  She has a lot of ‘dud’ films, especially lately.  She can be fantastic, but either has bad luck choosing projects, or is sometimes waaaay off.  I enjoy here in Yimous films.  Especially Raise the Red Lantern and Shanghai Triad.

    Having recently watched 2046 (again), she was not so strong in that film with here limited part.

    Are you joking? Gong Li gave the most memorable performance in the whole film (2046), i was moved..

    vry happy to hear of collaboration.  Most successful for both director and actress.  No one can direct Gong Li as well as Zhang Yimou.  Plus added bonus of Chow Yun Fat.  Wow!

    Gong Li, Chow Yun Fat and Zhang Yimou.  No one can direct Gong Li like Zhang Yimou. No doubt about it, Gong Li is one of the most beautiful actresses around (not cosmetically enhanced)

    Can’t wait to see Chow Yun Fat again in a Chinese period sword play film, the best part is Gong Li’s reunion with master film maker Zhang Yimou, i still cant help but recall her superb performance in the movie TO LIVE, im so definte with such combination it will again grace all the major film festivals, a word of advice to makers of THE BANQUET. move over, cause here comes the film WEARING THE GOLDEN ARROW IN THE CITY.....
