Germany Goes Genre Happy With KINGZ

So, I’m getting settled back in at home following a productive but very tiring trip to Berlin for the European Film Market and realizing as I sort through my market materials that one of the very best finds I made during the market had nothing to do with the market at all.  Shot as a student thesis film by young German film makers Benni Diez and Marinko Spahić with Kampfansage‘s Mathis Landwehr in one of the lead roles, Kingz was sent my way by a friend who just thought I should take a look at it.  I need more friends like this.

Remarkably well shot the film fuses a bit of gang culture with bits of horror, scifi, and martial arts action and does it all remarkably well.  Diez is an effects god, Landwehr gets time to show his moves and the whole thing just fits together beautifully and cries out to be made into a feature.  We’ve got the trailer in the Twitch player below the break and you’ll find more clips and things on the official website.

It’s been included in the German Saw box set so that’s one option, but LT, you’ll be getting a chance to see it on the big screen here this summer.  Not to worry ...

So it’s a feature length? Nice.

It has a great feel to it and it’s crazy that this was a thesis project.

    Thanks for the kind words!
    No, it’s not a feature. It’s a 20 minute short.
It was our graduation film last year.
MTV Germany screened it a few times, it’s been
included on the German Saw trilogy box, and now
we’re hoping for some festival buzz.

I’d totally buy a 10-15 dollar DVD of that. That looks nice.
