Now, while I’m not one of those fans out there who have anointed Spanish zombie flick [REC] one of the greatest horror films ever - seriously, the hyperbole on this one gets kind of silly - I do rather enjoy it. It’s a taut, lean and mean little picture, very well executed. And so it has of course had a remake prepared for the US market as quickly as humanly possible. That remake is Quarantine, it comes from the team behind The Poughkeepsie Tapes and we’ve got the trailer in the Twitch Player below the break. Watch and discuss amongst yourselves.

Boo. I’m glad I saw the original already. Looks like a shot for shot remake to me. It didn’t take them long to churn this one out did it?

well i guess this is for the people who dont like to read subtitles… looks like they decided to do some things different so ill bite and watch

The concept is fairly malleable - whether or not the Dowdle bros. took advantage of that fact remains to be seen. I’ve seen at least two trailers for this with audiences in theaters now and the response has been very enthusiastic.
Whatever happened to THE POUGHKEEPSIE TAPES? I saw a trailer for it in front of THE MIST last fall, then it was pushed, then pushed again, now...? I haven’t heard great things but - as with all faux-reality efforts - I’m certainly going to give it a shot if/when I get the chance.

Having not seen the original, I say this looks pretty good. It looks like there is really good use of night vision scares which, from experience, are usually the most terrifying.
Also, did I just see a zombie baby near the end of the trailer?

For comparison sake, here is the original trailer of [REC]:

Have to agree with brbro4 here, it does look almost exactly the same, noticed maybe a couple of changes, but as usual, the american remake wont have half the atmosphere of the original.
If it aint broke dont fix it!!
Nofare 07/17/2008 @ 10:18am
embarrassing for all involved.

I’m sorry I ever was involved in the initial viral campaign for this. Wow, nearly shot for shot. And the audience that hasn’t seen the original won’t know how much of the good shots and scares are given away in this trailer. Seriously now. Lazy.

I agree with most of the comments posted here. Christ almighty, it’s like they just xeroxed the original! I know it’s all about quick financial returns and all that but this was just painful to watch.
There is something that struck me as a little odd with this teaser though; now, correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the idea of a trailer to just simply ‘hook’ the interest of the viewer into shelling out money to go see the film, without giving away too much?
It seems from this effort though, especially obvious for those that have already seen the original, that they’ve just edited the film down to 2 minutes and given it away here for free, including - which makes no sense - the VERY FINAL CLOSING FRAMES of the movie where Angela gets dragged away by the ‘end-of-level’ monster!!!!
Way to go - just let everyone know, right from the start, that they shouldn’t bother getting attached or form any emotional bond with the on screen heroine as we’ve just seen that RIGHT FROM THE TRAILER she buy’s the farm at the end!
Unbelievable!
The original [REC] trailer gave no hints at all as to what it’s end reel was, which is where the movies real power was. The last 15 minutes of the film was it’s killer swerve - fantastic build up and intensity and edited to absolute terrifying perfection.
I agree with Todd that the overwhelming response to the original Spanish release was a little over the top but, nonetheless, it was an enoyable film that was well executed with a great ‘indie spirit’ behind it so props to those involved.
Anyway, if you really want an English language version of the film, the Spanish Region 2 release available at dvdgo.com has an English language dub on it. But it’s really, really bad.....
And Manuela Velasco was way hotter.

What doesn’t get overhyped these days, tho? I was thinking about this with the DEATH NOTE films recently. People were going crazy for them initially and when I got around to seeing them, they were OK at best in my book. It happens.
I do think [REC] is one of the better horror films of the last few years though. One of the things I really liked is that it had no pretensions about being anything other than scary as shit - at times it’s like an old-fashioned haunted house come to life, with ghouls popping out from around corners.

I totally agree with majorforce that this is a dreadful trailer in that it basically precis’ the whole movie from beginning to end. Anyone who goes to see the movie on the strength of the trailer is going to be pissed that they’ve already seen the final frames.
The teaser trailer is just as bad, which shows the army entering the building and discovering the bodies and the videotape.
I’m not totally against remakes and this actually looks pretty well made and should do okay business. But I think a shot-for-shot remake that adds nothing to the story or characters is pretty redundant really. Lucky for me I like subtitles.

Hmmmm.
The Ring was a good remake.
True...it wasn’t too scary but it took the original and add some extra flourishes while basically keeping everything the same.
A shot by shot....it just seems like it’s catering for the ‘stupid, middle ground’ theatre goers.
It does annoy me, especially when everyone will rave about this one and never see the original ala Infernal Affairs/ The Departed.
I agree with everyone about the trailer...My Girl watched it and I said ‘Now you don’t need to see either movie!’

Horror remakes: the plague of cinema in the early 21st century.
Jahsoldier 07/18/2008 @ 9:10am
The only thing that could make this remake any worse than it already appears (and by that I mean completely unoriginal, lazy and little more than a cash cow) would be if they try to add some sort of explanation as to WHY it is all happening. American studios always feel the need to explain everything and treat US audiences like idiots.
This might be an ok film but sadly the original will never get the respect it deserves. In total agreement with Brad on this one.
rpmasse 07/18/2008 @ 12:35pm
Personally, I’m tired of all these remakes. They are all bad and ridiculous and it proves that during the current decade, Hollowood (or whatever) only think about making foreign’s ideas their own and make money with them. That’s my opinion and honestly, I think its very bad for the next generations of directors and for the future movie industry.
rpmasse 07/18/2008 @ 12:38pm
I would like to add that I saw the original at Fantasia some days ago and its not a remake like that, that is gonna beat a great horror film like REC. I bet the remake will be less realistic.
MikeOutWest 07/19/2008 @ 2:54am
The other annoying thing with this movie - if the footage from the teaser is in the final film - there seems to be a framing device of military personnel going into the building and discovering the aftermath and-oh look, a video tape! I wonder what’s on it? If this footage is shown as a prologue, then its going to deflate whatever tension is left in the movie (after having seen the trailer) and if its shown as an epilogue, then its guilty of copying the remake of Texas Chainsaw massacre - how novel, a copy copying a copy…
Collin Armstrong 07/19/2008 @ 6:41am
Well, with the original [REC], there was a teaser that featured footage (involving the little zombie girl) that wasn’t found in the finished film. Just helped to show the mood / style of the piece. Maybe that’s what the military footage is here? Maybe not…
sarkoffagus 07/19/2008 @ 3:08pm
If this is truly a remake, why aren’t they all speaking Spanish? What a gyp.
