The Ten
Just a couple days ago we posted what appeared to be an in-progress trailer for Stephen Chow’s new scifi comedy CJ7. That version featured English narration but, unfortunately, the dialog was all Chinese only. Well, the trailer is no longer in progress and is now available fully English friendly - with narration and English subtitling in place. The film hits screens in March and you’ll find the new trailer below the break in the Twitch Video Player.

Why the hell did they swap out the Canton language for Mandarin and used a dubbed Stephen Chow? Weird.

As an international trailer I figure they figured that Mandarin + English subtitles would be able to be understood by more people than Cantonese + English subtitles. Technically I suppose that’s correct, as I’d wager there’s more Mandarin speakers than Cantonese speakers in the world, and English is generally a good “fallback” language. I can only presume the US trailer will not feature any dialogue at all in an attempt to trick functionally illiterate Americans into watching a subtitled movie. Assuming it’s subtitled here at all.
There’s a kid in it, and even though it’s utter nonsense, the conventional wisdom is that kids would never, ever watch a subtitled movie. The reality is that children old enough to read are MORE likely to watch a subtitled movie than adults because their viewing habits aren’t as set in stone, and children are generally more intellectually curious than adults. Adults are just too dense and set in their ways to understand this, and besides, it’s in their own best interests as a corporation to dumb these kids down. Stupid children tend to become stupid adults, and stupid adults, as we have all seen in the first decade of the 21st Century, will buy whatever horseshit you’re shoveling their way. Smart children are more likely to become smart adults, and smart adults tend to have more discriminating tastes and are therefore more difficult to separate from their money.
Here ends the paranoid, off-topic rant.

The trailer still doesn’t grab me, but I’m willing to give Chow a pass on a less than stellar trailer if the film delivers. Its been a while since Kung Fu Hustle and he has a lot to live up to. I’m ready to love it, I just need a little convincing.

I’m seriously going to kill that “movie voice” guy, just so i don’t have to hear his dull generic voice again.
