The Good, the Bad, and the Weird
Way to go, Liew Seng Tat! The young Malaysian director’s debut feature, Flower In The Pocket, will be competing in the Berlinale’s Generations section. The category was where Yasmin Ahmad’s Mukhsin won earlier this year. Some nice coincidences: Yasmin Ahmad’s mother appears in Flower In The Pocket, and one of the young actresses from Mukhsin also has a role in Flower.
Berlin has announced the line-up for Generations. Apart from Flower, the KPlus section includes A Tale of Two Mozzies by Jannik Hastrup and Flemming Quist Moeller (Denmark), Buddha Collapsed Out Of Shame by Hana Makhmalbaf (Iran/France), Chop Shop by Ramin Bahrani (US), Hey Hey It’s Esther Blueburger by Cathy Randall (Australia), Mutum by Sandra Kogut (Brazil), The Lives Of Titanic The Cat by Grethe Boe (Norway), and Where Is Winky’s Horse? by Mischa Kamp (The Netherlands).
The young people’s 14plus programme are 32A by Marian Quinn (Ireland/Germany), Ciao Bella by Mani Maserrat-Agah (Sweden), City Of Men by Paulo Morelli (Brazil), Fighter by Natasha Arthy (Denmark), Munyurangabo by Lee Isaac Chung (US), September by Peter Carstairs (Australia) and The Black Balloon by Elissa Down (UK).
