Lost In Translation
A few weeks ago the pre-order listings started to appear. Always good for a decent advance warning of a release, they’re also nothing but trouble if you want to avoid speculation, and don’t really offer much up to talk about.
Anyway, as there were clear issues with the UK ’Lady Vengeance‘ DVD (the sudden disappearance of extras, the revelation that they’re a licensing nightmare) and because, historically, ’Mr.Vengeance‘ is the nicest on the Tartan R1 USA DVD, and ’Oldboy‘ is a toss-up between the final Korean DVD and the nice UK one, there’s a quandry. If you’re led by Extras you’re still not necessarily going to end up with an ultimate set pertaining to the series - it’s essentially a double-dip (which I always think’s regretable) - because the specifics may never entirely way up, so much possibility for one small inclusion or exclusion to pull people one way or another.
Considering the price, if you don’t already have the films or you’re some years down the line and reading this, the set will become one way to get all films easily (price will be even better then - check the sales!), and if you’re not too fussy about the content quality then it’s bound to be a good buy to some.
You see what I mean? Not clear-cut, was never going to be, maybe never will be...
Here’s whats revealed : ’Lady Vengeance‘ has two hours of extras, the ’Fade to Grey‘ version will also be included (first appearance of this outside of Korea), additional commentaries, deleted scenes. ’Oldboy‘ with have a Harry Knowles commentary. The set will also available in a deluxe packaged box (like the ’Ultimate Edition‘ of ’Oldboy‘ issued in Korea), with some nice unnecessary tacky gifts - hammer-shaped bottle opener! - and will be numbered. £50 for the lesser one, £70 for the lush one - that’s only recommended prices though. Both set for October 23rd 2006. [Source : DVDTimes].

Hi,
Just to say that the “Fade to Grey” version has been released in France two months ago. So, it will not be the first appearance of this outside of Korea. Here is our review (in French) : http://www.cinemasie.com/fr/fiche/video/9077/noscritiques.html
Bye.
