First Trailer For Yuasa’s KAIBA!

What have I learned to expect from ace Japanese animator Masaaki Yuasa?  That nothing he does will look anything at all like what’s he’s done before.  Mind Game bore little resemblance to any of his earlier character and design work.  Kemonozume was nothing at all like Mind Game - or anything else out there.  And now the first television teaser spot for his new series Kaiba has arrived and it looks nothing at all like anything else he’s done.  Know what else I’ve learned to expect from Yuasa?  Absolute brilliance.  The guy’s one of the absolute best out there and though all I now about this one is that it’s a sci-fi love story it absolutely cannot arrive soon enough.  You’ll find the first teaser embedded below the break.

The character designs are definitely reminicent of the “time-reversing” cartoon in MINDGAME.  I don’t know what to make of it, no clue whatsoever; but with this director that’s pretty much a given.  I am confident it will, if nothing else, be unique.

(KEMONOZUME was good, but definitely not in the same “instant bona fide classic” league as MINDGAME.  MINDGAME is a film for the ages.)

Looking forward to it, but the trailer really isn’t much. Still I like the style, he always brings us something with a more original look. In this case it’s very retro, reminds me of Megaman.

The character designs are so adorable. Totally different from what I expected.
