I’ve been waiting to see something from hugely acclaimed director Fernando Meirelles’ upcoming Blindness for a good while now.  Not only is it the latest from the director of the stunning City of God but it combines a compelling story - a highly contagious and incurable virus causing instant blindness is ravaging the world - and the writing skills of local boy Don McKellar but it also boasts a sterling international cast that includes Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Yusuke Iseya (Sukiyaki Western Django), Gael Garcia Bernal and more.  Well, the first teaser has arrived and it while it focuses almost exclusively on the American cast - no surprise as this is an American trailer, I expect the international versions to be more diverse - it looks like truly compelling stuff.  I’d expect no less.

You’ll find the teaser below the break in the Twitch Player.

Just from the tidbit of dialog and how it’s delivered (particularly when Ruffulo wakes up and informs Moore.) there’s some gravity here.  Pretty cool stuff!

City of God was amazing all around and The Constant Gardener while not as good, was still exceptional.  I’d expect no less out of this one!  Bring it on!

I don’t know, I’m not convinced. It just seems like a ridiculously over the top storyline with “Oh look! It’s Gael Garcia/Danny Glover” thrown in.

Nice type treatment on the poster. Nice colours, too. But that vague hand on foggy glass bit… I don’t know how many times I’ve seen that on this site.

Film could be pretty cool. Obviously need to reserve judgement until those international trailers you mentioned pop up, though.

Eh, I’ll wait and see. It’s forcing a certain prolificness that’s leaving me in subtle doubt

The premise is intriguing, and far more plausible than the recent apocalypse films such as 28 Weeks Later, I Am Legend, and the upcoming M.Night film. Now that’s a film with an over the top premise, nature attacking humanity. Blindness reminds me of an episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. The episode in which all of the town’s residents are suddenly unable to speak. I loved City of God, and The Constant Gardener was a powerful film. Looking forward to this one.

Blindness is a fantastic book. Saramago won the Nobel Prize for literature. The novel is in company with Camus’ the Plague. With Meirelles on board, if nothing else, this will be an exceptional looking film. Very strong cast can’t harm things either. Plain and simple, whether or not the film proves to be a winner will all boil down to how well the McKellar screenplay is.

hm, i am quite sick of these epidemic movies. always the same (looking at 28 days/weeks later etc.)

You’re dumb. That’s an amazing idea, look at Blue Gender.

    FORGOTTEN FILMS,

Instead of the childish name-calling, why not try to present an intelligent argument? A film can have an over the top premise and it can still be a great idea. Nature revolting against humanity is an over the top premise. I never said it wasn’t an interesting idea to explore on film.
