The Science Of Sleep
Reasons to be excited about Fumihiko Sori’s upcoming Ichi:
1. Sori is the director of the cult live action hit Ping Pong and the big, splashy and very, very pretty CGI animation Vexille. He makes good movies.
2. It is a re-imagining of the long running Zatoichi series of blind swordsman films with the lead character recreated as a young woman.
3. Haruka Ayase is not ugly.
4. The first teaser has just been added to the official website and it is also not ugly.

WAIT! First news of this and then Sonny Chiba’s version of Zatoichi? Kitano Takeshi’s vision was great and almost redefining. I am interested in both but which one will feature better action? I’d like to put my money on Chiba-san’s but I have a weakness for the strong female types…

Whew, this trailer looks GREAT. Blind Swordswoman. Can the original series finally be re-issued with good transfer and sans dutch dubs? I’m so excited to see this movie appearing. Wow.

Looks promising.
Zen99 are the US’s HVE releases dutch dubbed? I thought the transfers were decent, but the Animeigo’s were better.

She’s quite easy on the eyes indeed, so count me in too.

Sonny: I’m sorry, I was not clear with my comment. There was a famous variant on the Zatoichi series starring a Blind Swordswoman (Crimson Bat series.) They did four of these before the series was abandoned. For years and years, the only copies of the Crimson Bat series were bad VHS transfers with bad dubs and dutch subs. Even getting these on dvd in recent years meant seeing the same bad vhs dubs. I was referring to those films.

Thanks Zen99, I had heard of that series, but have never seen an episode.

Sonny: Hardly worth seeing (for the bucks) at this point. The ‘english’ translation/dubbing is really horrible. The dutch subs are very very distracting. The overall quality (print status, darkness etc.) is horrid too. I hope that the release of this new series prompts a restoration of the Crimson Bat series because there appears to be a good movie experience(s) lurking in those hyper-bootleged pix. (I have all four of the Blind Swordswoman series - not as good as Lady Snowblood but (one imagines) it could be close if the prints were fixed up.)

Man I’m in a Haruka Ayase moment. Loved her work on the jap serie Hotaru no Hikari and also Byakuyakou. Very versatile actress. Can’t wait to be able to check out this movie. Looks like it might be awesome.
Not hard on the eyes....not hard on the eyes at all
. She can kill me anytime…
