appleseed ex machina.jpgTwo weeks ago, Appleseed EX for PS2 was release in Japan and included in the game is a short preview for Appleseed 2 (also refer as Appleseed Ex Machina). Fortunately for us, someone has leaked the footage onto youtube. The animation looks so much better than the first one. With John Woo onboard as producer, I’m sure the action is going to be awesome. Take a look as soon as you get the chance because it may get taken down. Some screenshots of the teaser is available here.

That looked OK but the problem is that this teaser predictably focused on action/fight scenes. Those scenes were quite good in the first film as well. It was the non-fighting dialogue scenes and scenes of human characters just walking around and doing everyday stuff that made my brain hurt with their atrociously bad motion capture work. So until we get a full trailer with hopefully some dialogue in there I’ll remain skeptical.

Bad motion capture? That didn’t bother me at all. I was very impressed with all technical achievements on Appleseed including the way characters moved.

I actually used the scene where Hitomi picks up Deunan in her car to show off the animation style of this movie (explosions and robots are too much for some people).

The only problems I would bring forward have to do with story and characters. Well, just one technicality then: faces often looked very lifeless, more like puppets than people, but that is a design decision.

John Woo equals doves, churches and slow mo shootouts.

@ Ardvark: The comparison with puppets is a good one but I don’t attribute that to the design because they *moved* like puppets too. The way people moved and talked reminded me of PS1 cut scenes. It was utterly distracting and occasionally more than a bit creepy.

@ swarez: John Woo hasn’t equaled anything but hackwork and unintentional self-parody for the past 10 years.

“John Woo hasn’t equaled anything but hackwork and unintentional self-parody for the past 10 years.”

    Yeah and that too.

Yea, but the unintentional parody that is HARD TARGET is one of my guiltiest of pleasures....

  7. swarez 03/01/2007 @ 12:08pm

I think Hard Target was the best thing he did here in the west. Damn shame really.

  8. Caterpillar 03/02/2007 @ 1:14am

Hard Target was 1993 and as such didn’t fall into the 10 years of hackwork and self-parody I mentioned above. I enjoy that one as well. IMO the last semi-watchable thing he’s done was Face/Off in 1997. Hopefully his return to Asia will reboot his career.

I have to seriously question the judgement of anyone who thinks this teaser contains “good animation.” Sorry

tubesoda: To be fair, since YouTube ruins the quality of whatever you put on it, you can’t really judge the animation quality from that video. Not only is that video less than a 6th of the resolution it should be, it’s also at a fraction of the framerate.
