In Between Days
I wanted to stay away from anything related to Superman Returns, or anything comic book related for that matter, simply because everyone else will talk about it as well and its not all that original or exclusive news at the end of the day when I get home from work and look for stuff to post. I firmly believe that the film is in great hands with Bryan Singer and I think it will rule like lords. But I gotta tell you, I’m kind of disappointed with the poster. Sure, it is a classic and clean looking piece, but it is also dull as dirt.
I was even more so when Cinemablend drew my attention to some of the fanart on BlueTights.net. Though you can definitely see the influence of other superhero films [Batman Begins and Spider-Man being the most obvious] there are some real gems too- Diamonds in the rough.
What do you think? Do you like it? Do you loathe it? Would your frame it or line the cage of your pet budgie Mr. Pip with it?

Well, it’s roughly the same concept as the one behind behind the 1989 Batman teaser poster. The bat-symbol had the added benefit of not being bounded by the page, which gave it a slightly more interesting use of space and negative space, whereas the Superman shield is sort of floating there.
However, it’s doing what it needs to do: it’s a teaser. It needs to show something familiar, but with a slight twist, a slight newness to generate speculation and/or anticipation. The three-dimensional aspect of the shield, as well as the metallic quality, should hopefully give it a crisp realism in the eyes of the average filmgoer, as opposed to taking the same concept but keeping it the flat comic book logo.
Should there have been a face or a body or a name or something with built-in action? My guess is this will all come eventually, but on the onset the symbol by itself is a conversation piece, and a canny marketer will be well-aware that that sort of discussion can built a groudswell of interest prior to the film, and can be more successful than deluging the airwaves, billboards, etc.

I’m sure this is around elsewhere as well but I haven’t gotten around to checking the normal western world wources yet and I just found the Superman Returns teaser here on a Russian site ...

I think a series of posters with glimpses of Supes would have been a better tease. His cape fluttering, his famous lock on his head and such, then end on his logo on his chest.

That teaser trailer is not real. It’s made by a fan using clips from the official video-blogs and the comic-con footage. See also here.

If this was 5 years ago, that would have been great. Lately, I feel the minimalist method, although effective, is more cliche. I guess overall, though, I like it. It will probably be quite effective with the mass market as well as those who years for the days of Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder.

*Shudder* Uhgh Margot Kidder.

Swarez, that’s an awesome idea - that would be a really cool marketing campaign.
This poster gets a hearty “meh” from me.
