Oh, this makes Todd a happy boy.  Fyodor Bondarchuk’s Inhabited Island has been one of our most anticipated titles around here for the past year for a number of reasons.

First, Bondarchuk is one of the brightest lights in current Russian film, his war picture 9th Company proving that he’s one of the absolute best in the world when it comes to balancing character, action and technical style.  With this picture Bondarchuk has one of the largest budgets ever for a Russian film and I fully expect that he’ll make good use of it, an expectation borne out by the early stills and behind the scenes footage that has popped up online.

Why else?  Well, it’s a full on sci-fi epic based on a novel by the Strugatsky Brothers.  Who are they?  Just the authors of Stalker, which was made into a post-apocalyptic sci fi classic by Tarkovsky.  Russia’s got a long history with the sci fi genre and the Strugatsky’s are widely considered to be among the very best.

The first proper teaser from Bondarchuk’s film has just arrived and while it’s very much a tease - the picture has been divided into two parts and the release of the first is still a long way off - it looks absolutely stellar.  Yum.  You’ll find it embedded below the break in the Twitch Video Player.

    some alternatives for docx conversion:

download the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats

    or

    try http://docx-converter.com/ or http://www.docx2doc.com/

Installing the microsoft update would be the safest route (well, mostly safe, it is Microsoft).  Never tried the other two and the do requrie a email address (could just use a temporary address), and you’d have to open an email and or attachement from them which could be little hinky.

    Or install Office 2007, heh.

Also there’s the manual method (from http://www.drostdesigns.com/ms-word-2007-converter-how-to-open-docx-files/):

Rename the .docx file (after downloading) and change the extension from DOCX to ZIP. The icon associated with the file changes. Windows will now see it as a ZIP archive instead of a Word document. You can open the contents with WinZip, WinRAR, PKZIP, or any other ZIP compression tool.

The actual content of the document is contained in the document.xml file. You can change the contents of the file by editing the XML file directly with notepad, drop it back into the ZIP container, then change its extension from ZIP to DOCX. Now you have made the change to your docx file.
