I don’t normally do posts dedicated purely to announcing poster art. I just don’t generally see the point, and would rather focus on stuff from the films themselves rather than the marketing materials. But I’m making an exception, here. This is after all the upcoming adaptation of Neuromancer, a true classic of the scifi world whose influence it would be very hard to overstate and a book that many - myself included - consider to be pretty much unfilmable, though I’m certainly curious to see what will happen. The casting of Hayden Christensen in the lead gives me pause, though his general sleepiness may actually suit the character pretty well, as does the presence of Joseph Kahn in the director’s chair as Kahn hasn’t really shown anything to indicate he can handle this sort of project yet. But, man ... that poster art is incredible and it fills me with all sorts of happy feelings. If nothing else they certainly understand the aesthetic ...

“The casting of Hayden Christensen in the lead gives me pause”
- The under-fucking-statement of the year. Ouch. I weep.

Just tragic. That someone made a marginally artsy poster that has nothing to do with the movie does little to hide the enormous cinematic misstep that is being taken with this material. Expect any intelligence and life to be drained out of the book and a flashy music video husk of a generic SF action movie left in its place. Also, expect a ‘rockin’ soundtrack by Linkin’ Park, or whatever group of hairy knuckledraggers Hollywood has pooped out this week.

Hayden Christensen is actually a good actor—if you’ve seen him in Shattered Glass. But I’m not convinced this is good casting.

Looks like a book cover! Which is sort of interesting, I guess…
But ho! What’s this?
“They’ve changed Case’s name to Cage? Hayden Christensen is the star too? I don’t have a good feeling about this.” says a commenter on that site you linked to.
If we are seeing substantial changes like this before even really receiving any real word on the project, then things don’t look like clear weather on horizon.

Did William Gibson write the screenplay?

Wait???
How did Linkin Park get into the director’s seat for Neuromancer?
I can’t even begin to imagine a chain of events that would have this as its outcome.

So he’s directed a bunch of Britney Spears videos, and Torque.

Hahn’s also done a short film called The Seed that’s actually quite good.
Mike 08/01/2008 @ 1:11pm
Yeah, but this isn’t Joseph Hahn, it’s Joseph Kahn.

Holy shit, this film is going to be one epic disaster. Such a shame to waste a cool poster in a film like this one.
Simon Abrams 08/01/2008 @ 5:13pm
I was upset when I realized that you said Joseph Kahn, not Cedric Kahn.
I love Cedric Kahn’s RED LIGHTS.
I have nothing to say about Joseph Kahn that hasn’t or probably won’t be said in this thread.
Also, Hayden Christensen was good in SHATTERED GLASS because he had good material. He’s no major talent but he can do a decent job with a good script.

The Japanese should have made this film. Oshii for starters.

I think the salient question is whether it even matters anymore. Specifically, Neuromancer has been mined so much in film and popular culture that it will probably seem entirely familiar and even mundane now. Reality has caught up with it.
Ichi-The-Killer 08/30/2008 @ 11:35pm
I like the poster but the casting and director dont please me at all.
