Kamikaze Girls
Thanks to Andrew for passing along the first image of John Hillcoat‘s film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy‘s fabulous post-apocalyptic novel, The Road. Hillcoat’s previous film, The Proposition, earned high praise around these parts, and was gritty in just the right way to suggest that he is a perfect fit for the bleak novel. Viggo Mortensen looks fabulous in that image, as does Kodi Smit-McPhee (last seen in the also quite grim Romulus, My Father). To say that expectations are high for this one is an understatement of biblical proportions.

Best book of the last ten years. Do it justice, Hillcoat, or I’m going to hunt you down and kill you.

Hillcoat is a great fit for this. The Proposition was masterful.
I wouldn’t expect this to do at all well in the box office because it is so dire. I did like the novel a lot, but it really is a kick in the guts.

This could be great!
I thought The Proposition was very similar in tone to McCarthy’s masterpiece, Blood Meridian. I think Hillcoat will do something special with The Road.
