We’ve been saying for a while that Korea is the sleeping giant of global animation. The nation is home to hordes of talented animators and technicians who have been a prime labor force for Western projects for years, highly sought after because of their high degree of skill. What the nation has lacked, however, are its own animation studios and writers to lead the way with original stories and ideas of their own. Thus, while they’ve always had lots of talent there, there is shockingly little in the way of “Korean” animation. But there are signs that is changing and at the forefront of the charge is animation house Studio Flying. These are the folks behind last year’s raucous Aachi and Ssipak and Aachi animation director is about to take a bow with his own project, titled Mad Monkey. Here’s the synopsis:
If a super hero had existed in the ancient history of the East, what would have happened? The work of art “Mad Monkey” had been created with such a concept. It is an Oriental fantasy film in which the protagonist is a figure who has a past of imagination, the suffering of human beings, and the power of superman. The 2D and 3D techniques had been used in combination. With visual perfection and the bold scenario, the work of art stimulates the interest of the watchers.
The film just had its premiere at the PISAF animation festival and a snippet of footage is available from that appearance. Verrrrrrry tasty.
