After This Our Exile
Well, glory be. CL Hor’s Kinta 1881 is a film that I have literally been tracking for months now, just waiting for the day that the first trailer would arrive. Billed as Malaysia’s first martial arts film - a claim I see no reason to dispute - the film stars a handful of real life martial arts champions battling it out in massive underground tin mines. The pedigree of the fighters got a lot of people’s attention, then came the behind the scenes reels that showcased the stunning natural sets and brutal action - I’m fairly certain one of the performers is knocked out cold in one of them - and the first artwork released proved that director Hor is capable of shooting some truly impressive film. Put it all together and it should be something special. The trailer certainly seems to say so ... it’s beautifully shot and the action looks stellar. You’ll find it below the break in the Twitch Player.

Looks very impressive but when does it come out Todd? The official site said in Cinemas November 2007. I guess it was delayed. Any news on if they are going to release it soon? It looks to be very good.

i’m pleasantly surprised by the trailer. i hope CL Hor gets to redeem himself with this after the disastrous 3rd Generation.

wow just wow?
I really cannot understand this enthusiasm… this flick seems to be an amateur b-movie.

Not that I should need to justify my opinion here, but I will say this - martial arts films of any kind are fun to watch. Martial art films from somewhere other than Hong Kong are always interesting, as the style changes in a major way (take Ong Bak, for instance). To me, much of what made the HK scene back in the 90’s has been churned over so many times, there is little left but bare tires on those treads (although SPL certainly did a good job of upping the ante).
These guys obviously have some decent skills and if you can’t appreciate that then it’s obviously not a film that you’ll enjoy. Personally, I thoroughly enjoy watching fighters do their thing - good story or not - but to me, there are some very nice visuals in this and some great moves. This teaser doesn’t have enough story in it to tell whether there is something holding all the fights together, but even so, the direction seems solid.
So, what’s not to like?

the fighters in the movie are actually malay chinese martial artists. plus they are choreographed by Hong Kong people. should be interesting!

Looks like there’s potential for a decent, dramatic plot to drive the action, based on what’s in the trailer. Definitely on my radar now…
