Definitely one of the most anticipated films to come out of Asia this past year, Feng Xiaogang’s The Assembly was a huge hit with both audiences and critics, a trick the director of The Banquet and World Without Thieves has pulled off all throughout his career. The big budget war picture could be billed as the Chinese equivalent to Saving Private Ryan, a technically astounding film using shocking realistic imagery to put together an essentially anti war message. Press is great, trailers are better, and the film hits English subtitled DVD in Hong Kong March 6th. Nice.

anyone seen it ? the banquet was so-so. better than average but maybe not good enough to warrant buying the DVD. and since then struggle if I should try selling it.

I still haven’t caught up with The Banquet yet. And I think Legend of the Black Scorpion is out on r1 DVD today.

There’s actually a 2 disc Mainland release out now. Anamorphic, DTS, English subs. Don’t know how it looks or anything, but it’s available on Yesasia right now, for $11.

That’s embarrassing. Apparently “Black Scorpion” and “The Banquet” are the same movie. In my best Walter Sobchak voice: I did not know that.
