The Great Yokai War
English subtitled trailers for the two latest Tomie films - Tomie: Beginning and Tomie: Revenge, both directed by Ataru Oikawa - have turned up on the Horizon Entertainment web page.
How to even describe these ... based on a long running manga by Junji Ito - one of Japan’s best known horror writers, also responsible for Uzumaki - the Tomie stories are a twisted ghost story, telling the story of a girl who repeatedly falls in love with different boys only to by killed, dismembered, grow back from her severed parts, and set off on a quest for revenge. The film series has been a bit uneven but the good ones are very good and the return of original director Ataru to the helm is a very good sign for these ones.

TOMIE - REBIRTH was the best of the bunch so far, I think, directed by none other than Shimizu-san. I’m attracted to all the TOMIE films, but the trailers tend to sum up all the best bits. They’re based on the short sharp shocking manga stories, which are too insubstantial to sustain 90 minutes, especially on low, low budgets. These 2 new filmss look like they’ve got good budgets going for them, I’m just waiting, waiting for DVD releases…
There were some translations of Junji Ito’s original TOMIE manga published in 3 U.S. collection a few years ago. These, and his awesome UZUMAKI stories are all highly recommended, if you like horror comics that actually horrify…
