Edgar Wright is [not?] going to put a man in a suit and remake ‘Gorgo’?

EDIT*** I’m half way out the door for the whole weekend and I’m just awaiting word from Edgar if this report is indeed untrue. Until I have confirmed otherwise we sadly have to assume that it is the real Edgar who has responded in the comments below and that the report over at RoboJapan is incorrect. Bummer. Oh well, doesn’t cost anything to dream.

Oh this is yummy news. Once you have proven you have the skills to pay the bills then your workload starts to add up. Writer/director Edgar Wright, much loved for his work in British television and film [the only SPACED tv series that counts! Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz], has announced another project. Edgar wants to put a man in a suit and remake the 1961 monster movie Gorgo, a film I had the pleasure of seeing screened from an original film stock in the last year. Giant monster goodness is on the horizon!

Neither Bombs, Bullets, Jets or Rockets Can Stop Gorgo...But This Little Boy Knew His Secret! A salvage vessel is nearly sunk off the Irish coast by an undersea earthquake. A few nights later, a walking sea monster tangles with the fishing boats and enters the town. The salvage vessel captures Gorgo and takes it to London for display. Gorgo’s mother, who is upset and significantly larger follows his trail to London leaving a wake of destruction in her path. IMDB

Avery over at RoboJapan wonders if this was the ‘giant lizard’ that Simon Pegg was referring to when news about the third collaboration between Edgar and himself, titled The World’s End, broke out not too long ago. Either way a project like this can only be handled well by someone who can respect the source material and yet still have a bit of fun with it. Edgar has already displayed those skills so this makes Mack a happy boy.

This could be the greatest thing ever.  I’d much rather see Edgar Wright do a man-in-suit movie than Trey Parker and Matt Stone, who just apparently cancelled something similar.  Excellent.

Gorgo was a great giant monster movie. A lot of it still holds up even today! I’m interested in seeing how a revival could work. Cloverfield’s showing seems to be stirring up a few giant monster movies for the future. A genre I wouldn’t mind seeing in the midst of the superhero-comicbook movie era.

    Ummmm. Untrue.

Oh snap. It’s EW himself. What’s untrue, that the project is happening, or that it will be man in suit?

  5. Swarez 05/02/2008 @ 11:40am

I love Gorgo, it was in fact the first giant monster film I ever saw and one of the first movie memory I had.
I later found out that my uncle had a small part in, according to IMDB at least but I’ve never seen him in it.

I do wish that a proper DVD release would come out, the last release was way too dark and muddy.

We came across this news bit on a French forum. We didn’t want to be ‘jumping the gun’ and getting anyone’s hopes up,but we also didn’t want to be kicking ourselves about it later for missing such a huge scoop. It would be a fantastic idea though.

It’s untrue that I’m remaking Gorgo. Don’t know where that came from.

I have the DVD, but am not doing a man in suit film in the foreseeable future.

However I would like to remake WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS as WHAT HAPPENS IN TOHO and have billboards touting MECHA CAMERON VS ASHTON ZILLA.

    Print that rumor.

  8. Avery 05/02/2008 @ 7:18pm

LOL!!Thanks for clearing that up Edgar!!The source was from a French forum:  http://babelfish.yahoo.com/translate_url?doit=done&tt=url&intl=1&fr=slv&lp=xx_en&trurl=http://lemondedeskaijus.forumdediscussions.net/films-d-autres-studios-f5/un-remake-de-gorgo-t112.htm that had gotten it from some radio show: “FSX Radio London”??Well,it would have been nice to see and I think you would have done a great job with it.I do like the “VEGAS ZILLA” idea though...hmmm??Can I quote you on that??LOL!

There’s corrections, and then there’s corrections.  Keep up the great work, Edgar.  Even if it isn’t GORGO.

I want to clarify some things since it seems I’m the origin of this rumor .

First I haven’t heard anything on the radio , I was told about a radio interview , it’s not the same thing . I made some research and I didn’t find anything about this radio and this supposed interview .
It’s true I’ve opened a thread on my forum about that , but it was because I found nothing and I hoped someone else could give me information .
It seems I was misunderstood (and the yahoo translation wasn’t speculative enough I think), I never was afirmative on this remake it’s only something I heard and about what I wanted information .
I couldn’t have imagined someone would find this post in my tiny forum on the HUGE internet . And now this rumor has crossed the Atlantic ...

Sorry guys for the misunderstanding but it was only a rumor , and a false one seemingly .

  11. Avery 05/03/2008 @ 7:32am

It’s ok ‘Keizer G’,I don’t think that anyone was upset by any of this.Theses misunderstandings happen all the time. It’s a big part of what the news business is all about.A lot of supposed ‘scoops’ just turn out to be rumors in the end.It was actually on ‘two’ websites before ‘Robo Japan’.Also the size of a website doesn’t matter. Some of the biggest scoops are broken on the tiniest of blogs.I would also like to point out that it was posted in “?"= in question form on both this site and the original “Robo Japan” post.No one assumed to know anything for a fact, and we were all just simply asking the question. Now he has kindly taken time out of his busy schedule to answer it and we can all move on with our lives. No harm done.

I feel that I should chime in here. Indeed I did post the information as a rumor. I normally don’t do this, but you have to admit that it was just too juicy to pass up. As Avery mentioned above, there were other sites that were listing “Gorgo” as a done deal, that is why I felt comfortable about posting the article. Oddly enough, most of those sites were French in origin. I can only wonder if the same person who sent Keizer G the info was spreading it around the country. I do want to say that I am sorry for helping this one get out of control.

One thing that is getting lost in all of this, is the fact that there is a market for a Gorgo remake. If you look at all the postings about this around the net, they all are very possitive. Maybe Mr. Wright should look at this a possible project after all? He may not have planned to do the film, but the fans of his work have spoken and they would all love to see it. Meybe this mess could convince him that this may be a worthy project to take on in the future. Just a thought.

If not Mr. Wright, then maybe someone else?

These things happen from time to time. Last year Quentin Tarantino stated, also on UK radio, that he wanted to make a Godzilla movie. Does that mean that he is making one? Highly unlikely, but you can see how that kind of thing could be taken out of context.
