Oooh, some fun news here for fans of Hayao Miyazaki. Davis DVD have gotten word that Manga Entertainment will be releasing the master’s Lupin III feature, The Castle of Cagliostro in North America on August 15th. The film will be digitally remastered and the slate of special features looks good.
Thanks to Jungwhan - who also points out a Sept 26th release for Takashi Miike’s Imprint - for the news.

Actually Castle of Cagliostro has been availiable on dvd for some time. This release is I think like their 10th anniversery Ninja Scroll disc, a newer version done to catch up with the current technology. *SIGH* And I just purchaesed the older versoin last month. C’est la vie.

yeh, this was announced a while back and is stuck in the DVD release calendar - its a remastered video / audio version. the ‘imprint’ date was announced this week, yep - thats also been submitted for the dvd release calendar : with the level of information a bit above our initial output i dont always make posts to just announce a dvd date is set or a titles announced, so its always worthwhile (as always) keeping an eye on the list geert jan put together which i pump lots of dates into these days…

Manga Entertainment fucking suck and they clearly have nothing but contempt for the fans who buy their DVDs. Why else would they have failed to release a single flawless DVD in the past 10 years? I wonder how they will screw this one up. They keep finding new ways.

Their most recent release, Karas: The Prophecy, looked and sounded very good (unfortunately, the story was borderline incoherent, but that’s not their fault). The picture posted next to the article above is of the previous non-anamorphic DVD. The cover of the new version has been designed to look almost identical to the Disney Ghibli covers (with the red banner across the top and all).

Hey Mike Rea, at least you have the “classic” version of the DVD. I’d rather have this classic version (that is probably gonna be out of print now that the newer version is coming out) than the new version. Unless the new version is remastered, with additional bonus content, without any indication on the front cover in big sandscript bold that this is a generic 10th Anniversary pop commercial, money hungry release…

God I love that movie…
I guess I’ll have to buy the Special Edition to go along with my Original Edition and the VHS copy I taped off of the TV when I was 10.
