DVD: Masafumi Yamada’s TSUBURO (TSUBURO NO GARA) and Kazuyo Aoyama’s anime short “Ame kôjô” togeth

I noticed today that Twitch has never reported on the release of the PIA Film Festival: PFF Award 2004 Vol. 5 (PIA Film Festival: PFF awâdo 2004 vol. 5) DVD. Better late than never! The DVD (ADE-0555) contains both Masafumi Yamada‘s Tsuburo (Tsuburo no gara) and Kazuyo Aoyama‘s anime short “Ame kôjô”. Ace Deuce Entertainment K.K. (K.K. Êsu Dyûsu Entateinmento) released it in Japan on August 26th of last year.

The screenplay for Tsuburo was written by Yamada. The movie stars Hiroyuki Yoshioka as Tsuburo, Yûko Hosoe as Kaoru, Kei Takada as the old person, Tadayoshi Nishimura as Tsuburi, Ryôta Okamoto as the doctor, and Shunsuke Iki as Tsubura.

Here’s a description of Tsuburo from the Vancouver International Film Festival 2004 (VIFF 2004) subsite: “There’s been nothing like this in Japanese indie films since Tsukamoto made the original Tetsuo. After some unimaginable catastrophe, a woman and man recover consciousness in a wrecked hospital room. She’s a nurse, he’s apparently a patient (he has a strange, shell-like apparatus embedded in his back) and they seem to be trapped. Nurse Kaoru tries frantically to find a way out of the room, but Tsuburo, the man, is locked in a mental prison of his own. He has strange visions (screws, shells, an unsympathetic doctor) and tells her that he ‘burns inside’… Working as his own one-man crew, Osaka-based director Yamada Masafumi delivers a superbly crafted meditation on physical and spiritual entrapment - and on what it might take to break out.”

BTW, Yamada is still providing a downloadable trailer on his website for his 50-minute movie Waiting for the Flood (Teibô wa kôzui o matte iru).

    Are there English subs on the DVD ? I watched Tsuburo last year on Dejima (small Dutch film festival) and I’m dying to get it on DVD.

    I liked the music in the ‘Waiting for the Flood’ trailer but the footage is so stylized it gives me a very bad impression.
