Just a day after Kwak Kyung-Taek’s latest blockbuster 태풍 (Typhoon) dominated the Korean box office, selling 1.8 Million tickets in its first week of release, distributors CJ Entertainment announced they reached a deal with Hollywood major DreamWorks SKG, for North American distribution.
CJ met with DreamWorks last week to discuss a possible distribution deal, and eventually signed a contract with the company, which will enable ‘Typhoon’ to get a big scale release in the US and Canada. Director Kwak will meet with company representatives next month, to discuss details about distribution scale and conditions. He’s also debating making an ‘American Version’ of the film, for which he’ll leave the country soon.
A DreamWorks executive commented: “Korean films’ popularity is increasing all over the world, and I’m happy we can bring a high quality film like ‘Typhoon’ to the US market.” CJ President Kim Ju-Seong said: “For the last 10 years, CJ and DreamWorks shared confidence in each other, and thanks to their support, some of the best films in Korea will be able to be shown in America.”

Hell, that’s cool! I hope they as good a job with releasing Typhoon in the US as they did with Casshern.

But the question is...how will this be affected by Paramounts buyout of Dreamworks?

What fine job of releasing Casshern are you talking about?! That movie hasn’t seen the light of day stateside. Unless you’re being facetious
As for Typhoon, word of mouth - so far - is more on the lukeworm side. Same thing for Kaige’s The Promise. I truely hope it isn’t so since I’ve been looking forward to both films.

won’t be affected by the Paramount buyout. CJ owns 5% of DreamWorks, so that’s also one reason why this deal was signed.
