Director Wilson Yip and martial artist Donnie Yen is collaborating once again on their fourth project together for a biopic on Yip Man, a renown wing chun practitioner and mentor of Bruce Lee.  Wu-jing.org reports Lynn Hung, Simon Yam and Lam Ka Tung will also join Donnie in the cast line-up while Sammo Hung will serve as the martial arts director.  The film will mainly focus around the events of Yip Man’s life sometime between the 30s to 40s, taking place in Foshan, China.  Here are some comments from Yip & Yen on Yip Man.

Donnie Yen, who will be playing the Yip Man, says, “As Yip Man was not only a great master of his times but also the mentor of my idol Bruce Lee, I have never encountered any role that has brought me greater pressure or challenge than this. While I have been training in Wing Chun for 2 months, I don’t think I’m qualified to say that I truly understand Wing Chun. A few months of training won’t be sufficient to be able to propagate its essence. But I’ll rely on my foundation in martial arts and my hard work to promote Wing Chun, to let more people know about Wing Chun, about Yip Man."…

“...I hope that this will not be a pure kungfu film, but one with warmth and affections.” says Wilson Yip. Yip Man’s family will be one of the main themes in the film. Lynn Hung plays Yip Man’s wife, one who supports her husband’s career in wushu initially. However, later on, she becomes upset at her husband for neglecting his kids.

Production is set to begin in March and is expected to wrap up in June.

Wow, I am really looking forward to this! As a former Wing Tsun apprentice myself I hope they do Grandmaster Yipman justice. For you that don´t know, Wing Tsun is probably the most vicious and effective chinese martial arts style. It was invented by a woman.

    Go practice!

I hope Wilson and Donnie finally get to make a film with an actual good plot, this is an opportunity for that to happen.

i wouldn’t count on plot, just pretty pictures. after a good sha-po-long came a ridiculously stupid DragonTigerGate and now a somehow missed opportunity with Flashpoint. Let’s hope this one can live up to their first movie or surpass it.

    ...entering cautious mode....

If they can at least get a plot in the vein of Fearless then at least it would be something.

My Sifu Leo Au Yeung was action consultant on this movie. If you live in London & would like to learn Wing Chun why not check out one of his lessons, at South Wimbledon Community centre Monday nights.
